Get relief from snoring and sleep apnoea
Are you or your partner tired of restless nights, persistent snoring, or waking up feeling unrefreshed? At our practice, we offer comfortable, non-invasive oral appliances designed to help you breathe easily, reduce snoring, and manage mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
Unlike more bulky CPAP machines, custom-made oral appliances fit discreetly inside your mouth like a nightguard, giving you a quiet night’s sleep without uncomfortable masks or noise.
What is snoring & sleep apnoea?
While snoring and sleep apnoea are closely related, they affect your health and sleep quality in different ways:
- Snoring: Occurs when the soft tissues at the back of your throat relax during sleep, partially blocking your airway. As air passes through, these tissues vibrate, creating the familiar sound of snoring. While often harmless on its own, heavy snoring can disrupt your sleep and your partner’s.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA): A more severe condition where the upper airway becomes completely or partially blocked repeatedly throughout the night. This causes brief pauses in breathing (apnoeas), leading your brain to wake you up briefly to catch your breath. Many people don’t even realise this is happening, but it leaves them feeling chronically exhausted during the day.
Common signs of sleep apnoea include loud snoring, waking up gasping or choking, morning headaches, dry mouth, and daytime fatigue or difficulty concentrating.
Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs)
We are now offering custom-made Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs) to help patients who suffer from snoring or mild to moderate sleep apnoea.
A Mandibular Advancement Device is a custom-made appliance worn at night that gently moves the lower jaw forward to help keep the airway open during sleep. It treats the underlying airway collapse rather than simply reducing the noise of snoring. By gently holding your lower jaw (mandible) slightly forward. This subtle forward position pulls the tongue and soft palate away from the back of your throat, preventing the airway from collapsing.
- Discreet and quiet: Compact, silent, and easy to wear.
- Travel-friendly: Requires no power source or tubes, ideal for home or travel.
- Custom-moulded: Fabricated using precise digital scans of your teeth to ensure maximum comfort and retention.
For many patients suffering from primary snoring or mild-to-moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, a custom MAD offers an effective alternative to CPAP therapy.

What is involved in having an appliance made?
Your journey to a quiet night’s sleep is straightforward and expert-led:
- Free initial consultation:
We discuss your symptoms, lifestyle, and medical history. If you have already had a formal sleep study or diagnosis from a medical GP or sleep clinic, we will review it. If not, we can advise on screening options to ensure an oral appliance is right for you.
- Digital scans & impressions:
Instead of messy impression trays, we use advanced 3D digital scanners to take a precise digital model of your teeth and jaw bite position.
- Bespoke appliance fabrication:
Your scans are sent to a specialist dental laboratory where your Mandibular Advancement Device is custom-moulded using comfortable, medical-grade materials.
- Fitting & fine-tuning:
Once your device arrives back at our clinic, you’ll return for a fitting. We will ensure it sits comfortably over your teeth, show you how to place and remove it, and adjust the degree of jaw advancement for optimal airflow.
- Follow-up & monitoring:
We will see you for a review after a few weeks of wear to make sure your device is comfortable and successfully relieving your snoring or apnoea symptoms.

Aftercare
To ensure your appliance stays clean, hygienic, and effective for years to come, keep these simple steps in mind:
- Daily cleaning: Rinse your appliance with cool or lukewarm water after waking and gently brush it with a soft toothbrush and mild antibacterial soap. Avoid hot water, as high temperatures can warp the custom plastic.
- Safe storage: Keep your device in its protective ventilated case when not in use, away from direct sunlight and pets.
- Maintain oral hygiene: Always brush and floss your teeth thoroughly before inserting your device at night to prevent trapping food particles against your enamel.
- Regular dental checks: Bring your appliance with you to your routine dental check-ups so your dentist can inspect it for wear and check your teeth and jaw joints.

Frequently Asked Questions
CPAP is often recommended for severe obstructive sleep apnoea. However, for primary snoring and mild-to-moderate OSA, or for patients who struggle to tolerate CPAP masks, a custom MAD is an approved, highly effective alternative. During your consultation, we will review your symptoms and sleep study history to recommend the best path forward.
Because your appliance is custom-crafted to your unique bite, it is far more comfortable than over-the-counter "boil-and-bite" mouthguards. You may experience mild stiffness in your jaw muscles or slight salivation during the first week or two as you adapt, but this quickly subsides.
Over-the-counter guards are not customised to your teeth and bite. They are bulky, prone to slipping out during the night, and can cause painful jaw alignment issues or tooth movement over time. A professionally made dental MAD is designed specifically for your anatomy, offering superior comfort, safety, and effectiveness.
With proper care and maintenance, high-quality custom Mandibular Advancement Devices typically last between 3 to 5 years.
Snoring occurs when the tissues at the back of your throat relax and vibrate as air passes through a narrowed airway, creating that familiar rumbling sound. It can certainly disrupt your partner’s sleep, but air is still flowing into your lungs. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), on the other hand, is a medical condition where those relaxed tissues completely or partially block your airway, causing you to repeatedly stop breathing for several seconds throughout the night. While snoring is primarily an annoying acoustic issue, sleep apnoea forces your brain to briefly wake you up to catch your breath, interrupting your natural sleep cycles and putting extra strain on your heart and overall health.
While not everyone who snores has sleep apnoea, heavy snoring is often the most noticeable warning sign. You might suspect your snoring is sleep apnoea if your partner notices you are gasping, choking, or snorting in your sleep, or if you regularly wake up with a dry mouth, morning headache, or a feeling that you haven't rested at all. During the day, sleep apnoea often reveals itself through excessive fatigue, brain fog, irritability, or struggling to stay awake while reading or driving. If any of these sound familiar, a simple consultation or home sleep study can help determine what's happening so we can find the right custom solution to help you breathe easily again.
